| Introduction | Educational provisions which would allow gifted children to maximize
their potential constitute a serious gap in our educational system. Although many schools and school districts recognize this and would like to provide these services, they are frequently faced with budgetary limitations and lack of resources that do not permit this. Gifted And Talented Educational Services Research & Evaluation was formed for the purpose of filling this gap with an array of services at low cost that enable gifted children to fulfill their promise. Services described in this page include:
|
| Identification | Identification of your gifted students by G.A.T.E.S. Research & Evaluation encompasses all types of giftedness, with special attention to culturally diverse students. School and community demographics are studied, and administrators, teachers, and parents consulted prior to designing the identification procedures best suited to the circumstances. Your personnel may implement some of these procedures, or identification may be carried out by G.A.T.E.S. Research & Evaluation, according to the requirements of the individual situation. |
| Programming | Programs are designed to suit the needs of the school, with budgetary
limitations and the needs of the entire school population taken into account.
Curricula and program organization are designed to utilize existing space
and present staff and are generally low cost, with few materials required.
Programs are planned with a view to including the other students while
differentiating for the gifted through combinations of special projects,
activities, classes, independent study, and mentoring. G.A.T.E.S. Research & Evaluation makes use of community and school resources and works with you to tap into talents of teachers, parents, businesses, and cultural organizations with viable planning and program design directed to classroom practice. Public relations factors are taken into account and programs designed with attention to generating positive publicity for your school. |
| Teacher Workshops | Inservice workshops for meeting the special needs of gifted students are conducted for teachers. Workshops can cover a number of topics, such as interdisciplinary curriculum design, identification of special populations, evaluation, and teaching the gifted in the regular classroom. Graduate courses on site can generally be arranged, if desired. |
| Evaluation | Evaluation is crucial to the process of implementing programs for the gifted. Refinement of planning techniques and curricula are incorporated into the evaluation design. The evaluation may combine quantitative and qualitative data such as pre- and post-testing, concrete student products, site visits and observation, parent and student input, and community interface. A data bank can also be set up as part of the evaluation. |
| Interface with Parents | Parent groups are an important part of providing differentiated education for gifted students. Presentations are available for parent groups whose children may or may not be included in programs for gifted students. Discussion and interface create a climate of understanding through establishment of a forum for airing concerns while stimulating participation in innovative programs and school improvement efforts. |
